                     New year

    New hope

Times have been tough on many. But if one of your New Year's resolutions is to give more, we encourage you to keep us in mind.

With your help, we've been able to bring hope and peace of mind to the needy in our community for more than seven years. We've helped senior citizens prepare for end-of-life issues, tenants stay in their homes, and extended family obtain legal custody of abused children to keep them out of the foster care system.

We couldn't have done this for so long without your support and the fact is we still need it. So as this new year begins, take a moment to help bring hope back into someone's life.

Social justice facts

In Texas there is one attorney for every 337 persons who can afford to hire one, but only one poverty law attorney for every 11,762 persons who cannot. Find out what the Supreme Court of Texas and State Bar of Texas have to say about civil legal justice in Texas.

Up to 80 percent of all civil legal needs of the low-income population are not met. For more information, read the 2009 Legal Services Corp's report, Documenting the Justice Gap in America (PDF).

More than six million people throughout the United States are served every year by Lutheran social ministries. To find out more about the ELCA, along with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, and 300 health and human service organizations, go to the website for the alliance known as Lutheran Services in America.

Providing legal services to the poor as a social ministry may seem controversial. Our societal expectation is that the federal government provides funding for legal aid. To learn more on our nation's history and current trends in civil legal assistance efforts, visit the Center for Law and Social Policy's website.

As a Christian faith-based nonprofit organization, our agency is dedicated to bringing hope and peace of mind to all in our community (regardless of race, creed, gender, sexual orientation, or economic circumstances) by providing social justice with compassion. We encourage you, as a Texas resident, to use this website as a tool for finding out how to access greater civil legal justice for yourself or a loved one, no matter what your income level or educational background.

Disclaimer: Please be aware that as LMSS-Waco programs use non-attorney advocates to support and educate you through the civil law process, there are certain things we can and cannot offer.
